MITSUBISHI GOING TO LAUNCH OUTLANDER HYBRID IN 2013

Mitsubishi is working on its next-generation Outlander SUV, inspired by the recent PX-MiEV and PX-MiEV II concepts.

While the Mitsubishi MiEV concepts utilise a petrol-electric plug-in hybrid powertrain, the new Mitsubishi  Outlander is expected to stick with conventional petrol and diesel hearts.

A hybrid version of the new SUV has been expected since the first PX-MiEV was revealed in 2009, and a new report in Japan's Nikkei business paper this week suggests it could arrive as soon as 2013.

In an official statement, Mitsubishi India has stated that the company will not be launching its Pajero Sport SUV in India at the Expo, as planned earlier. The delay has much to do with the flood situation in Thailand which jeopardized the operations of various carmakers, including Mitsubishi.

According to Mr. Manoj Jha, Managing Director, Hindustan Motors, “we had decided to launch Pajero as well as new variants from the HM stable at the Auto Expo 2012 in New Delhi. However, some dislocation of operations at Mitsubishi Motors’ Thailand facility due to natural calamity and unexpected events compelled us to alter our plans for participation in the auto show. The rescheduled launch of Pajero and HM stable vehicles will start from the first quarter of the coming year (2012) with appropriate publicity”

The new pajero may sport a 2.5-liter 16-valve inline-4 intercooled turbocharged DOHC diesel producing 136PS of power and 314Nm of torque. Equipped with ABS, Airbags, EBD, Collapsible steering column, Reverse Camera, Cruise Control & 2 DIN touchscreen, the Pajero Sports looks like a rather advanced piece of kit. The new version of the SUV will be sportier looking than the present one and would accommodate 7 people. Expect the price to be in the region of Rs. 20 lakh.

Mitsubishi is also mentioned another passenger vehicle in the New Year, without divulging any further details.

2014 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER

Mitsubishi has showed its plug-in hybrid SUV concept at the Tokyo Motor Show.

The new concept PX-MiEV is “very close to the production design of the next Outlander. Just change the wing mirrors and it’s almost the finished car.”

The PX-MiEV II previews a new four-wheel drive range-extender system that uses two electric motors, one to power each axle, and a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine.

Alternatively, the petrol motor can act purely as a generator for when the battery reserve is low but pure electric mode is still most efficient.

Mitsubishi sources confirmed that the power train would definitely make it into production and that it was a global vehicle.
